These pieces are études, studies (or sonic vignettes, poems, essays - however one wants to call them), inspired by my forthcoming collaboration for Another Africa (www.anotherafrica.net). They occupy that space somewhere between a musical release and sound art, and they'll surely end up on various future albums of mine in a revised form. I started imagining a possible future Africa and what kind of new music could exist there, and I know it's a terribly pompous thing to say - especially considering the existing African musics which for me are unparalleled in their beauty and musical sophistication - but this is how things often start in creative practice: you imagine a possible world or situation, and then try and pull yourself towards that through your work. That's what makes it so fun. And the end result doesn't necessarily have to reflect this; in fact it nearly always fails. But that's another new possibility...
